Most auto repair shop owners have never heard the term "NAP consistency," but it quietly affects whether your shop shows up in local search results at all. It's one of the simplest local SEO factors to fix, and one of the easiest to get wrong without realizing it.
What NAP Consistency Actually Means
NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone number. NAP consistency means that information appears exactly the same everywhere your business is listed online: your website, your Google Business Profile, Yelp, Facebook, industry directories, and anywhere else your shop appears.
"Exactly the same" is stricter than most owners expect. Google treats these as different businesses unless they match precisely:
"123 Main St." vs. "123 Main Street"
"Charlie's Auto Repair" vs. "Charlie's Auto Repair LLC"
"(704) 555-0123" vs. "704-555-0123" written inconsistently across platforms
An old address or phone number still listed somewhere from a past move or a dropped landline
Why This Quietly Hurts Your Rankings
Google's local search algorithm cross-references your business information across the web to confirm you're a real, established, trustworthy business at a real location. When it finds conflicting information, it doesn't always know which version is correct. That uncertainty can:
Weaken your local ranking, since Google has less confidence in your business data
Confuse potential customers who find an old address or disconnected phone number on an outdated directory listing
Waste the trust-building value of reviews and citations that are technically pointing to a slightly different version of your business
Where Inconsistencies Usually Hide
Most shops don't have one obvious NAP problem. They have several small ones scattered across places they forgot they were ever listed:
Old directory sites from years ago that were never updated after a move
A Facebook page with a different phone number than the current one
Yelp listings claimed by a previous owner or manager
Your own website footer or contact page using a different address format than your Google Business Profile
How to Clean It Up
Search your business name and go through the first few pages of results to find every listing that exists.
Pick one exact format for your name, address, and phone number, and use it everywhere going forward.
Update your Google Business Profile first, since it's the listing most directly tied to local search rankings.
Work through directories one at a time, updating or claiming listings as needed. This takes patience, but each fix adds up.
Check your own website, including the footer, contact page, and any schema markup, to make sure it matches too.
